How to Calculate Business Days
Count weekdays while accounting for configurable weekends and public holidays.
Define the interval first
Choose the start date, end date and whether your business rule includes either endpoint. Different systems use different inclusion rules, so state the convention before comparing results.
Set the working week
Saturday and Sunday are common weekend days, but not universal. Some organizations use Friday and Saturday, Sunday only, rotating shifts or a custom calendar. The calculator must use the pattern that applies to the work.
Apply holidays after weekends
Start with the calendar dates, remove configured weekend days, then remove verified holidays that fall on an otherwise working day. Do not subtract a holiday twice when it already falls on a weekend.
Country is not always enough
National calendars may omit state, provincial, religious or company-specific closures. Delivery, payroll and legal deadlines can also follow special rules, so add local exceptions when the decision is critical.
Document the result
Record the date range, weekend pattern, holiday source and endpoint convention with the final count. Those details explain why two business-day totals may differ even when the dates match.
Compare the endpoint rules with a small range
Use October 5 through October 9, 2026 as a simple Monday-to-Friday example. This tool includes both endpoints, so there are five calendar dates and five working dates when Saturday and Sunday are weekends and no holidays are subtracted. The days-between-dates tool returns an elapsed interval of four days for the same endpoints. Neither result is automatically wrong: they answer different questions. A schedule that asks how many staffed dates are included needs an inclusive count, while a date interval asks how far apart the dates are. Write the endpoint convention beside your result before using it in a quote or plan. If your workflow excludes the starting date, adjust the workflow explicitly rather than assuming every calculator follows that convention or subtracting one without checking whether that first date was a working day.
Change the weekend before changing the answer
Not every workweek uses Saturday and Sunday as days off. In the sample range October 4 through October 8, 2026, a Friday/Saturday weekend leaves five potential work dates, while a Saturday/Sunday weekend removes the Sunday and leaves four. This is a model setting, not a claim about the law or every employer in a particular country. Choose the actual organization’s weekend pattern and state it with the output. A holiday that already falls on an excluded weekend should not be deducted again from the same calendar date. If an observed holiday is stored on a different weekday, that separate record can affect the result. Confirm what the published calendar covers and which observed dates your organization uses before turning an arithmetic result into an operational promise.
Verify the calendar coverage before a deadline
A stored holiday list can only answer for the country and years it actually covers. Before using a multi-year range, check that each relevant year is available and read the source links on its calendar page. A missing record does not mean that no holiday exists. National data can omit regional, sector-specific, school, bank, or employer closures. A business-day count also does not establish a legal deadline, a payroll rule, a cutoff time, or a service-level agreement. Use this calculator for a transparent estimate, then verify any binding rule with the responsible source. Save the range, weekend pattern, holiday choice, and endpoint convention alongside the estimate so someone else can reproduce it. If those settings change later, recalculate rather than presenting an old total as if it still describes the new calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Are the start and end dates included?
That depends on the chosen convention; confirm endpoint handling when comparing systems.
What if a holiday falls on a weekend?
It should not be subtracted twice, though an official substitute weekday may be a separate holiday record.
Are regional holidays included?
Only holidays present for the selected calendar are included; confirm local closures with an authoritative source.
